1. Finding demand.

You can use many tools to drill down from a broad industry and find a niche to promote.  I like to use dmoz.com.  I usually click on the shopping tab.  Then I can browse all of the categories and sub categories and find one that may interest me.  It also must be something that I would be interested in writing about.

Once I drill down far enough, I will take the keywords for the niche that I find and throw them into the Adwords keyword tool that Google has.  It will tell me the searches performed by the month on the niche.  It will also spit out the related keywords that are typed into Google.

2. Finding supply.

Using Dmoz.com and a keyword tool is an example of finding the demand for these keywords.  In order to market effectively, now you need a supply with little competition.  

The next step is to take some of the keywords that have high monthly traffic and type them in to see what the competition is.  The easiest way to do this is to wrap them in quotes in Google.  

When you wrap a keyword phrase in quotes, it tells the search engine to find all sites that are targeting the phrase exactly how it is.  If the sites that pop up are less than around 5,000, I know that I could easily get on the first page for that phrase.

3. Searching for an affiliate program.

The last step on finding your niche affiliate marketing program is to look in a search engine for one.  Simply type in your keywords or niche and follow it with the words “affiliate program.”  Research the best one based on your commission, how the site looks, and how much traffic it gets.
